Fascia: The Body Network by Tatiana Trivellato

Have you ever considered a connection between your feet and your neck? Meet the fascia: a connective tissue that forms a body-wide tensional network. The fibrous architecture of fasciae provides resistance when muscles are stretched, and slack when muscles are in a shortened position.  Fascia connects all muscles and organs, providing structural support for posture and movement. Elastic and resilient fascial structures serve as an internal mechanism to improve movement performance and prevent injuries. Similarly, external elastic props can be used to provide support, resistance and sensorial feedback during exercises.

Kimberly's favorite move uses a looped band, called Stretch-eze, to create resistance.  "Using the support and resistance of the Stretch-eze actually feels good," says Kimberly, "while it creates a cleaner access to the deeper abdominal and low-back muscles."

Name of Move: Pilates Low Back/Core Activation using a Stretch-eze band.

Why She Likes It:  This move allows you to strengthen your transverse abdominal muscles and low back, improving pelvic stability and core strength.  It will also improve joint stability, hip strength, and range of motion.

Sensory Props for Older Clients

Sensory props can be valuable to the dance/movement therapist; any prop that stimulates the tactile, vestibular and proprioception systems are sensory in nature and contribute to how our bodies receive and process new information, therefore helping adults and children who have difficulties with bilateral motor coordination, sequencing, balance, posture tonicity, and spatial orientation. When you use sensory props during your movement sessions, your clients will end up feeling more relaxed and receptive to change.
