Stretch-eze

Have you ever considered a connection between your feet and your neck? Meet the fascia: a connective tissue that forms a body-wide tensional network. The fibrous architecture of fasciae provides resistance when muscles are stretched, and slack when muscles are in a shortened position.  Fascia connects all muscles and organs, providing structural support for posture and movement. Elastic and resilient fascial structures serve as an internal mechanism to improve movement performance and prevent injuries. Similarly, external elastic props can be used to provide support, resistance and sensorial feedback during exercises.

Thank you everyone who visited us both at the workshop and the ADTA table!! It was so good to see old friends and meet new dance/movement therapists doing incredible work.  Susan Kleinman we always thank you for your support.  Rena KornBlum gave an incredible workshop on diverting school violence and showed how to access and utilize group support with our Stretch-eze.  Balls and Bands workshop was special in that I had a very good group of willing and able participants who stayed present with alot of new and challenging material.  Meg Chang who I have always respected was there along with Lenya Treewater, Amber Gray (who I finally met) and many new people who were clearly devoted to dance/movement therapy work.

Sensory Props for Older Clients

Jul

Sensory props can be valuable to the dance/movement therapist; any prop that stimulates the tactile, vestibular and proprioception systems are sensory in nature and contribute to how our bodies receive and process new information, therefore helping adults and children who have difficulties with bilateral motor coordination, sequencing, balance, posture tonicity, and spatial orientation. When you use sensory props during your movement sessions, your clients will end up feeling more relaxed and receptive to change.

Kimberly's favorite move uses a looped band, called Stretch-eze, to create resistance.  "Using the support and resistance of the Stretch-eze actually feels good," says Kimberly, "while it creates a cleaner access to the deeper abdominal and low-back muscles."

Name of Move: Pilates Low Back/Core Activation using a Stretch-eze band.

Why She Likes It:  This move allows you to strengthen your transverse abdominal muscles and low back, improving pelvic stability and core strength.  It will also improve joint stability, hip strength, and range of motion.

I love all the Co-operative Blanket for large groups as well as the individual Stretch-eze products, which I have in all sizes. My older clients particularly like the Stretch-eze product for the support which it offers them in asanas such as navasana (boat pose). For my clients who are more emotionally challenged, the Stretch-eze product provides a wonderful container. I also recommend the accompanying DVDs for these wonderful products. Thank you Kimberly for these creations!!
