Airwalker Installation and Safety Information

Since each home installation is unique, a professional should be consulted to install your Airwalker and ensure your intended location will safely support the weight of your child.  Typically, an exposed overhead stud is sufficient if you use a forged eyebolt rated for at least 500 lbs load purchased from an industrial or wholesale hardware store and that extends through a hole drilled through the center of the stud with a washer and lock nut on top.  If the top of the stud is not accessible, a stud hanger can be used mounted to the sides of the stud with bolts.   Proper installation of the eye bolt is critical to the safety of using the Airwalker.   Thread the adjustable webbing strap through top swivel of Airwalker.   Use a safety clasp (not included but also available at hardware or marine supply store) and hook to webbing strap top loop and ceiling eye bolt.   Adjust strap length to accommodate your ceiling height and user.   We now have a highly durable rotater device sewn right into the airwalker which puts less stress on the fabric when spinning!

You can purchase the suspension hardware direct from SouthPaw Enterprises or locate comparable hardware in hardware or marine supply stores. Southpaw has a ceiling support manual that you may want to review and/or they will help you analyze the safety of your structure. Please feel free to e-mail SouthPaw at therapy@southpawenterprises.com . Or, ask your architects or engineers to call SouthPaw at (800) 228-1698, and they can recommend solutions to their possible problems.

Remember that during treatment activities, the pull will not always be straight down. Even a gentle swing on the equipment varies the angle of pull on the ceiling support point. There should be no more than a 1/4 inch of movement in your eye bolt. A ceiling support eye bolt which sways back and forth more that a 1/4 inch is UNSAFE. If your ceiling support point moves or rotates, it is not safe and should not be used. To be safe, all ceiling support points must be able to hold at least a 1000-pound load. The eye bolt should be at least six feet from any wall. Some bolts, such a wood screws and bent wire bolts, are unable to withstand heavy loads and excess movement. Eyebolts of this nature could pull or twist out of the ceiling support or even break in half. Once installed, check the eye bolt and all other metal items for wear. Whenever metal rubs on metal over a period of time, one of the pieces will eventually start wearing. Check your equipment regularly, when it begins to show visible signs of wear, arrange to have it fixed or replaced.
